Ok so you're looking at the aftermath of Helene and you're thinking "shit, how would I keep my phone charged? What about my neighbors?" and you have some outdoor space and some cash. Your friendly formerly off grid sheep farmer is here to help.
You need this set up right here:

Y connectors:
The 100aH (amp Hour) deep cycle battery of your choice - lead acid AGM will be cheaper, lithium (LiFePo) is more expensive but lasts much longer.
Finally, you need a small pure sine wave inverter like this one: https://a.co/d/70vRd79
Plug the panels into the Y connectors then into the single wire to run to the charge controller. They are now connected in parallel. Take them outside to a sunny spot and face them south and prop them up at about a 45 degree angle. This isn't perfect but it will be good enough.
Connect your battery and charge controller. Connect the panels to the charge controller. All of the places to do this are labeled and all you need is a Phillips screwdriver. I recommend doing it once in a non-disaster situation so you know you can do it but you'll be fine. Boom, you are getting electricity from the sun!
The inverter draws power even when it's not running so don't leave it hooked up when you're not using it. When someone needs to charge their phone, put those alligator clips on the matching color battery posts, turn the inverter on, and plug in the phone/radio. Voilà! A single 100aH battery is not going to run a bunch of things but it will help keep cell phones charged without using up the gas in your car.
The panels are weatherproof but everything else needs to be protected by the way so you'll need to set this up in a shed or garage or in the house. Lead acid batteries can produce hydrogen gas when being charged but just having one isn't a big risk.

It is true that places sell "solar generators" - those are a charge controller, battery, and an inverter in one box at a very high price point. EU universal charger rules come into force
BRUSSELS
EU rules requiring all new smartphones, tablets and cameras to use the same charger have come into force, in a change Brussels said will cut costs and waste.
Manufacturers are now obliged to fit devices sold in the 27-nation bloc with a USB-C, the port chosen by the European Union as the common standard for charging electronic tools.
"Starting today, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port," the EU Parliament wrote on social media X.
The EU has said the single charger rule will simplify the life of Europeans and slash costs for consumers.
By allowing consumers to purchase a new device without a new charger, it will also reduce the mountain of obsolete chargers, the bloc has argued.
The law was first approved in 2022 following a tussle with U.S. tech giant Apple. It allowed companies until December 28 to adapt.
Makers of laptops will have extra time, from early 2026, to also follow suit.
Most devices already use these cables, but Apple was more than a little reluctant.
The firm said in 2021 that such regulation "stifles innovation", but by September last year it had begun shipping phones with the new port.
Makers of electronic consumer items in Europe had agreed on a single charging norm from dozens on the market a decade ago under a voluntary agreement with the European Commission.
But Apple, the world's biggest seller of smartphones, refused to abide by it and ditch its Lightning ports.
Other manufacturers kept their alternative cables going, meaning there were about half a dozen types knocking around, creating a jumble of cables for consumers.
USB-C ports can charge at up to 100 Watts, transfer data up to 40 gigabits per second, and can serve to hook up to external displays.
At the time of its approval, the commission said the law was expected to save at least 200 million euros ($208 million) per year and cut more than a thousand tonnes of EU electronic waste every year.
"It's time for THE charger," the European Commission wrote on X. "It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need."

it's a cute demo, but the popsci articles sure fail to mention that the demo generated at peak around 250 nanowatts per square centimeter. That's 250 billionths of one watt. Not considering charge/discharge effects or the efficiency of a system this large or anything besides sheer area, how large a panel would it take to charge my phone?
My charger is 5V @ 2A, so 10 watts.
250 nW * 10^4 cm2 per m2 * 10^-9 nW per W gives 0.0025 watts per square meter. You'd need 4,000 square meters of panel to charge my phone. Four thousand square meters is about 3/4 the size of an American football field.
For comparison, I can get 10 watts out of a solar panel that's about 30cm by 30cm or one foot by one foot.
Maybe this system isn't optimized, but the authors estimate the maximum available energy density of electricity in air is about 0.05 W/m2, meaning a perfect collector in perfect conditions with no losses and no inefficiencies would still need to be 200 square meters to charge my phone compared to, yknow, a tenth of a square meter of solar panel.

In fact, a kettle actually uses 20 times more watts than a fridge. And an iron uses a staggering 2,800 watts - that's more than 200 times more than is needed to power a mobile phone charger.
As a guide, you should only load one plug socket with a maximum of 3,000 watts. But it might be easier to remember the sorts of products that require more and less around the home. How many is too many when plugging devices into an outlet? It really depends on the appliances you're plugging in. Always work out the total wattage of all the devices going into the one socket. If they add up to more than 3,000W then it's not safe - the plug in the socket can overheat and potentially cause a fire. A kettle can max out the socket capacity all on its own, while having your washing machine and dishwasher plugged into an adaptor would mean you're a massive 1,440 watts over the recommended amount.
Appliances like your fridge, radio or lamp are far more suited to sharing sockets. Take note if you're moving plugs around to try to squeeze extra devices in. Are block extensions better or worse than extension leads? We prefer extension leads if used correctly. Block adaptors aren't unsafe but the weight of the plugs and the leads can start to pull the adaptor out of the wall socket leading to resistance heating and increasing the risk of a fire.
Plastic block adaptors that have lots of sockets and sometimes come without a fuse are always best avoided. A surge protector can absorb only so many surges before it stops functioning. Although it's practically impossible to tell exactly when this happens, the longer it's been used for the more at risk you are. If it's absorbed a serious power surge you should always replace it immediately.
Some surge protectors have built-in lights designed to alert you when it needs to be replaced. But you can't fully rely on this - it's not a foolproof system.
